We aim to inspire and help singers by showcasing artists of all levels, providing webinars with established professionals, and giving advice on all aspects of the singer’s life. Our mission is to aid you in creating the best brand for yourself, and have fun doing it!

Ellen Hinkle

Praised by KC Metropolis for her “nuanced acting”, “fine dancing skills”, and "sublime singing", Ellen Hinkle is quickly establishing herself as a versatile artist and a young performer to watch. Ellen has performed with companies such as Winter Opera Saint Louis, Gateway Opera, Midwest Institute of Opera, and Opera Breve. In 2015 Ellen was featured in Marble City Opera’s rendition of La Femme Bohème where she fulfilled a life long dream of playing a man! Isaiah Feken

Isaiah Feken, baritone, hails from Tulsa Oklahoma where received his bachelors in music from the University of Tulsa, magna cum laude. He received his M.M. from The University of Georgia, where he is currently pursuing his DMA. Isaiah recently made his professional debut staring in Pittsburgh Festival Opera's production of Kiss Me Kate! Other roles include the title roles in Sweeney Todd, Don Giovanni, and Gianni Schicchi. Kirsten C. Kunkle

Kirsten is an active performer who’s been hailed as having a “beautiful operatic voice” with “fiery dark tones,” as well as being “infectiously vivacious” onstage. She has an extremely supportive husband, as well as two wonderful dogs that model for her knitting projects. Her favorite roles include Mimì, Rosalinde, Lisa (Pique Dame), Donna Elvira, and the Witch (Hansel & Gretel). She recently made her Carnegie Hall debut, and has recordings collected at the Library of Congress, the Merkel Area Museum, and NMAI at the Smithsonian Institution, where she is on the list of Classical Native Artists and Musicians. Phoebe Gildea

Soprano Phoebe Gildea has been praised for her vibrant voice, honest acting, and engaging stage presence. She's performed with companies including Eugene Opera, Cascadia Concert Opera, and the Astoria Music Festival, among others. In addition to opera, she's recently branched out to create her own solo concerts on themes such as art song by American composers, walking the line between opera and musical theater, and Halloween music, her favorite holiday. Kathie Kane

Kathie Kane, #thehipstermezzo, recently graduated summa cum laude from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam with a B.M. in Music Performance. Her previous credits include Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Lazuli (L’Etoile), and Third Lady (Die Zauberflöte). She premiered the role of Nate in The Fox and the Pomegranate, and commissioned Wilde Songs by the composer, Matt Frey, for her senior recital. When she’s not singing, she enjoys reading (high fantasy, nonfiction, poetry), playing Skyrim, and finding good, cheap wine. Arizona native Alyssa Click is pursuing her M.M. in Opera Performance at the Boston Conservatory ('18). She holds a B.M. in Voice Performance with an Opera focus from Northern Arizona University ('16). A few of her favorite roles have been Anna (Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor), Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro), Lois Lane (Kiss Me, Kate!), and Roxie Hart (Chicago). She also enjoys having been music director and choreographer for multiple shows and events. Malinda Wagstaff

Malinda hails from Spokane, Washington. She is currently pursuing her B.M. in Vocal Performance at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Favorite roles include Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Janet in The Drowsy Chaperone, and Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance. Malinda loves to cook, study foreign languages, and play with her dog.

Tara Priolo

Colorfully diverse and Twin Cities-based soprano, Tara Priolo, is currently collaborating on and creating a variety of classical and contemporary repertoire. Most recently Tara collaborated with many Twin Cities-area community performers on “My Refuge is Humanity,” a benefit concert for refugees. She participated in the inaugural tour of drip project, and performs with Vox Nova Chorale and Exultate Chamber Choir. Buga Marija Šimić

Buga Marija Šimić is a Croatian soprano who recently graduated from the Academy of Music in Zagreb, and is currently obtaining her MA in opera performance at the Bern Univeristy of Applied Sciences in Bern, Switzerland. She's performed in student productions of Le nozze di Figaro (Susanna) and Il matrimonio segreto (Elisetta) and will be making her professional debut as Arbate in Theater Orchester Biel-Solothurn's production of Mitridate, re di Ponto. Besides opera, Buga is obsessed with musicals and secretly gives performances of Legally Blonde in her car. Victoria Lawal

Named Fine Arts Scholar by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Victoria Lawal has been seen across the United States and abroad as a soprano soloist and educator. Under the tutelage of Ms. Penelope Bitzas at Boston University, The young soprano, has made appearances as Marzelline (Fidelio), Emily (Our Town) and La Princesse in Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges. After a summer at Songfest as a Young Artist, Ms. Lawal looks forward to presenting a new song cycle this spring featuring her original poetry. Victoria's favorite off-stage activities include yoga, vegetarian cooking, searching for vintage clothes and aggressively affirming her friends.

Nadia Marshall

Nadia Marshall completed her undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance at Florida State University. She has been dancing Argentine tango and boxing for 4 years. She is a lover of fitness and has participated in events such as Burpee 5k's. Besides fitness, Nadia also enjoys learning holistic approaches to healthy singing and life. Carolyn Forte

Carolyn enjoys performing opera and choral repertoire in the D.C. metro area and across the country. She has sung Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Messiah, Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, Mozart's Exultate,jubilate, among other works. A lover of Puccini heroines; Carolyn has portrayed Magda (La Rondine) and Mimi (La Boheme) -- Tosca is on her wishlist! As a Spanish speaker, Carolyn also has an interest in opera from Latin America, and covered the title role in Catan's Florencia en el Amazonas with Emerald City Opera (2016). Sydney Roslin

Sydney Roslin, a self-proclaimed music geek, joined the Modern Singer team in April of 2017. She is currently a student at Carnegie Mellon University where she is pursuing a dual degree in Vocal Performance and Creative Writing. You can usually find her with a song stuck in her head and a story half-finished on her laptop. She is excited to write for and connect with the opera community!

Laura Isabella

Laura, soprano, has been a writer for Modern Singer since 2016. She originally hails from outside Albany, NY. Laura holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. She is currently pursuing her Master's of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ where she studies with Eric Rieger. She has most recently been seen as the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte with Opera Theatre of Montclair in Montclair, NJ and Gerhilde in scenes from Wagner's Die Walküre with Westminster Choir College's Opera Workshop. When Laura’s not on stage, enjoys traveling, reading, pizza, baking, checking out new memes, and laughing until her sides hurt.

Emily Gallagher

Emily Gallagher, soprano, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance at Carnegie Mellon University with minors in French and Italian. Emily is one of the founders of Perfect Harmony, a music service and outreach organization that serves the Pittsburgh community and she is a sister of Sigma Alpha Iota. In addition to performance, Emily is passionate about stage management and holds several professional credits with Pittsburgh Festival Opera. She hopes her writing will inspire and encourage singers, and bring attention to new and unique opportunities for opera singers today.

Candice Shaughnessy

Candice is a dramatic soprano and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native. She recently moved to New York City where she is adjusting to big city life. Candice has been following Modern Singer for some time and is excited to contribute to the opera community. She is a fan of theology books, long walks in nature, coffee, cats, and Anthony Bourdain. Her favorite flavor of seltzer water is orange, and her favorite band is, and will always be, Bon Jovi.

Cassie Kutev

Texas based singer, Cassie Kutev, has delved into the roles of Carmen, Cherubino, Third Lady, and Third Spirit. When she is not splitting hairs over every vowel sound in the practice room and performing, she is the referee of twin daughters. Cassie spends her free time being a fake chef on instagram, making memes, and writing for Modern Singer Magazine.

Michelle Jarrell

Atlanta soprano, Michelle Jarrell, lauded as having “the voice of a ballerina,” is an active concert and oratorio soloist recently engaged with orchestras from North Carolina to Florida. This fall of 2017, she looks forward to her Tennessee debut with the Jackson Symphony Orchestra. Michelle earned her BA in Communications from the University of South Carolina, her BA and MM in Voice Performance from Converse College, and is a former Resident Artist of Opera Carolina. Rachel Daly, soprano, frequently appears in fully staged and concert versions of operas throughout the Philadelphia, PA area. Katherine Sullivan, Soprano, is a Boston based Soprano, and has been writing for Modern Singer since the summer of 2016. Casey Corvino

Soprano Casey Corvino grew up surrounded by the green mountains of Vermont. Having obtained her Bachelor of Arts at Manhattanville College, she is now pursuing her Master of Music in Opera Performance at Rutgers University. Casey has been hailed as a “German voice with Italian color” and was recipient of the Brian Lethbridge Vocal Award for Outstanding Achievement and co-winner of the Arlene Kaplan Competition. She is a lover of style, organization, and tea! Alberto Bonifazio

Alberto Bonifazio is an Italian pianist and baritone. He has completed his Master’s degree in Piano Performance from Genoa Conservatory, summa cum laude, and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Opera at Genoa Conservatory. He has won several international piano and opera competitions. Apart from music, Alberto always shifts towards trying and learning new things: he enjoys writing, reading, cooking, drawing and learning languages, while also passionate about science, astronomy, technology, and motoring.

Heather McConnell

Soprano Heather McConnell is a dynamic young artist currently pursuing her Master of Music in Voice Performance at Temple University, having recently received her Bachelor of Music summa cum laude from Gettysburg College. Heather’s latest opera credits include Dido & Aeneas (Dido) & The Pirates of Penzance (Mabel). A versatile performer, Heather has also appeared in a wide variety of theatre, most recently How to Succeed… (Miss Jones), Into the Woods (Cinderella), a reading of In the Next Room… (Catherine Givings), & The Scarlet Pimpernel (Marguerite). In addition to performance, Heather’s strong background in academia has earned her the Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award & a Mellon Summer Scholar Grant for her article, “And if any would meddle of my cause: Anne Boleyn, Music, & Sexism.”

Belinda Jimenez

Belinda received her Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from Boston University and both her Master's degree in Opera Performance and her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance from Arizona State University. She has performed with the Arizona Opera, Repertory Opera Company, Celestial Opera Company, Lyric Opera Theatre at ASU, and Boston University Opera Institute. In addition to writing and editing for Modern Singer, she also has a handful of published writings focused on vocal technique. Romanian-American soprano Esther Tonea has performed various concerts and recitals across the United States, Canada, and Europe, namely with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Opera Theatre, University of Georgia Opera Theatre, American Institute of Musical Studies, and the International Vocal Arts Institute. Esther combines her passions for travel, language learning, and music by participating in competitions and programs across the globe. In her spare time, Esther explores new baking recipes and obsesses over puppy pictures. Camilla Fincham

Camilla completed her undergraduate degree in Sacred Music with vocal emphasis at Florida State University. She currently works in IT and finds herself repeatedly asking "have you tried turning it off and on again?" and cracking Java installation jokes when her coworkers refill their coffee mugs. By night she channels her love of music, travelling, and writing into proofreading and editing for Modern Singer and writing a personal blog, FibroSpinnung. Camilla also has insatiable wanderlust, loves to laugh, never says no to chocolate, has a passion for languages, and is convinced that a cup of tea can improve just about any situation.

Rachael Colman

Rachael is a mezzo-soprano and graphic designer based out of Kansas City. She loves to help her fellow singers improve their audition portfolios, offering services from resume editing to headshot retouching to website design. She is currently on roster with several professional choral groups across the country, and maintains an active opera presence, most recently performing as Nancy in ALBERT HERRING with Opera Breve in Wichita Falls, TX, and as the title role in LA CENERENTOLA with the Midwest Institute of Opera in Bloomington, IL. Jenny Beauregard

Jenny is known as "a singer with something to say". As an active performer, budding entrepreneur, and Beachbody Coach, she has found balance with her love for performing, her zest for health and fitness, and her drive to help others. Sexi Soprano was born out of her passion for guiding young singers and to give them the support they need to feel confident and successful. Jenny is also the founder and CEO of Beauregard Arts Media, a company geared towards public relations and career consultation. Jenny loves to meet new people, read, work out, watch her favorite tv show "Friends" and hang out with her dog Chandler. She is inspired every day by the creative team and is continually looking forward to the future of the magazine.
